How to Prepare Files for an Accurate Manufacturing RFQ

A complete RFQ helps manufacturing teams understand the part, identify risks and provide more accurate process, cost and delivery feedback.

Key takeaway: A clear CAD model is essential, but the drawing, material, quantity, finish and critical requirements often determine whether the quotation reflects the actual project.

3D CAD Files

Provide the native or neutral CAD model when available. Common formats for discussion include STEP, STP, IGES, X_T and SLDPRT.

2D Technical Drawings

Use a controlled 2D drawing to communicate dimensions, tolerances, GD&T, threads, notes, standards and revision status.

Material, Quantity and Process

State the required material and standard, quantity, anticipated annual volume and manufacturing process if known. If the process is uncertain, describe the part function and priorities.

Critical Features and Finish

Call out critical dimensions, assembly interfaces, threads, inserts, surface finish and cosmetic zones. Explain the application and operating environment where relevant.

Inspection, Packaging and Timeline

Specify requested inspection or documentation before quotation. Include packaging needs, target timing and any customer approval requirement. Availability is confirmed by project.

Revision Control

Clearly identify the current revision and superseded files. One controlled source of requirements reduces avoidable questions during review.

RFQ Submission Checklist

  • ✓ 3D CAD: STEP, STP, IGES, X_T or SLDPRT when available
  • ✓ 2D PDF or DWG with revision, dimensions and notes
  • ✓ Material, quantity, finish, application and target timeline
  • ✓ Critical features, cosmetic zones, inspection and documentation requirements
